The Tens of listeners over at TBTL have been submitting their nominations for this year’s Song of the Summer contest. Official voting will begin soon. Before you cast your vote, though, you might want to check out some of the nominees.

I zipped-up the top 40 SOTS submissions and posted them here.

This will likely take you a while to download, because 40 MP3s apparently take up a lot of space. But if you have any issues downloading other than speed, let me know.

Also, I hope I don’t have to even say this, but if you love any of these songs and want them to be permanent fixtures on your iPod, please support the bands by purchasing their music directly from them. Also buy a t-shirt. Or a watch. Or a totebag. And go see a show.

When I was a kid, back in 1986, my sister and I had a collection of four cassette tapes from McDonald’s. They were called “Rockin’ Gold”, and even though they were just a collection of top 40 oldies hits, they had a huge impact on me. I listened to them over and over and over and over and over again. They were the soundtrack to my childhood summers.

I forgot about the tapes until about five years ago, when I heard Chad & Jeremy’s “A Summer Song” on the radio. That song was on the McDonald’s collection! I was suddenly overcome with the need to track down all four original tapes. I didn’t need the actual cassettes, but I wanted to find the playlists so I could recreate them.

The task was harder than I thought it would be; I couldn’t remember the actual name of the collection, and I couldn’t remember the name of the individual tapes. I just recalled keywords like “golden” and “classics” and “summer” and “McDonald’s”, and if you type those words into Google, you get all kinds of stuff that you can’t dance to.

Eventually I stumbled upon two of the tapes on this site, but I still couldn’t find the other two in the series. I asked for help from the listeners of the TBTL podcast, and they helped me track down the playlist for a third cassette.

One awesome Canadian had the great idea of searching the U.S. Copyright Office, which confirmed that there is a fourth tape: “Rockin’ Classics.” I haven’t found the playlist for that one yet, but at least I know it’s out there.

So, we’ve now accounted for three tapes in the “Rockin’ Gold” collection, and I spent this weekend downloading the songs and putting them in the order that God intended them to be played in (or at least the order that Ronald McDonald intended them to be played in.) And now I’m that much closer to reliving my childhood.

These tapes, I’m sure, will have little resonance with you — just a collection of Golden Oldies you’ve heard a million times. But if you want to pretend you’re a chubby, 10-year-old Andrew Walsh, download the tapes below, put them on your iPod in the right order, and go outside and play.

I think this is going to be an awesome summer.

But some of them are.

I got an email from my girlfriend, Vieves, recently. The subject line was “Actual plot points in the Law & Order SVU I’m watching.” It’s worth sharing.

A baby has been left in a dumpster!

It was probably the crazy homeless lady in the neighborhood who’s been pregnant.

Psych! She had pseudocyesis, aka hysterical pregnancy so she wasn’t even pregnant at all.

Oh wait, the baby was found wrapped in a t-shirt from some frat party from the local college.

Oh good! Only one of the shirts from the party can’t be accounted for and it belonged to some hot but intense girl who’s acting weird.

Bring her in, it was probably her.

Yep, it was her, she just had a baby and tried to kill it.

Oh, wait, she was raped! That’s why she acted crazy.

Psych! She wasn’t raped because it turns out she killed another baby the same way a year earlier but got away with it.

Now she’s a crazy baby serial killer.

But who’s the father? She declares she’ll never tell because he’s married with a family.

Oh wait! The DNA test magically reveals that the baby is the product of INCEST with her FATHER! A New York City councilman!

Her father raped her and fathered those babies! Gross! But wait! It wasn’t rape! He didn’t raise her, they met as adults and fell in L-O-V-E love.

They’ve been having an affair and no one can stop them because they’re legal adults.

But wait! The father lies on the stand and claims it WAS rape, so they have to acquit her on grounds of insanity.

BUT she’s not really crazy, so she and her daddy can be a couple again.

BUT the detective who investigated the crime tells the girl that she, the detective, was the product of a rape.

This magically causes the girl to confess that she wasn’t really crazy and she did dump both of her babies knowingly. (WHAT?)

Aha! Double jeopardy protects her on the second baby, but she can still be charged with murder for the first one.

Oh no! Meanwhile, Councilman Incest is about to take his son/grandson home to raise.

The detectives:”You’re never getting this baby!”

Councilman Incest: “We’ll see.”

FIN

Sorry, boys. She’s taken.

I’m not a big fan of this song. It’s too big and obnoxious for my tastes. But every time Rick Ross tells me he has a chopper in the car, I think it’s the most awesome thing I’ve ever heard.

Last month, the New York Times published a fantastic story about the way JC Penney figured out how to get great placement in Google search results. Around the holidays, if you typed a generic product into Google — like “dresses” or “bedding” or “area rugs” — the first result would inevitably be JC Penney. Which — theoretically — increased chances that you would buy these products from JC Penney instead of one of its competitors.

This was also true for some specific brand names, too. If you typed “Samsonite Luggage” into Google, your first result would have also been JC Penney, which sells that product.

The store accomplished this by basically gaming the system. It didn’t do anything illegal, just something that Google and other self-appointed web police look down on. It either created or hired a bunch of meaningless, empty web sites and posted links on them that pointed back to JC Penney’s site. This made JC Penney seem very popular on the web, and thus it achieved higher page rankings.

I looked into this topic for a radio show I was working on, and while I interviewed potential guests, I couldn’t help getting frustrated that no one would give credence to my devil’s advocacy. “But what did JC Penney do wrong?” I kept asking search experts. “How is it different than naming your pluming company ‘AAA Plumbing’ just to get listed first in the phone book?” None of the experts answered that adequately, but they all insisted Google was right to punish JC Penney for its “black hat” actions.

This all happened last month. Today, I was listening to an old episode of public radio’s On The Media, and the hosts were reading listeners’ letters. One listener wrote in to comment on the JC Penney story. I wanted to kiss my iPod when host Bob Garfield read it. I’m posting the audio and a transcript below.

[gplayer href="http://radiofreewalsh.com/audio/otm-letter-jcpenny.mp3"]On the Media: Listener Letter: JC Penney[/gplayer]

On our interview last week about how JCPenney gamed Google to achieve better search results, Ted Bunn of Richmond, Virginia writes, quote: “I’m baffled by your use of the words ‘sinister’ and especially ‘illicit,’ to characterize JCPenney’s search optimization strategy. Nothing in your report suggests that anything the company did was illegal. You can bet that all of JCPenney’s competitors do their best at search engine optimization. They’d be negligent in their obligation to their shareholders if they didn’t.

As far as I can tell from your report, JCPenney’s only crime was to be better at it. If Google wants to remain preeminent in the search business, its obligation is to plug holes in its algorithm. No one else is obligated to refrain from walking through any holes they find.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself. Trust me, I tried.

I am not going to sit here and tell you that I’ve never daydreamed about being one of the Hardy Boys. I don’t mind admitting it because I know you do it sometimes, too. We all do.

The reason I bring it up now, though, is because our time has come. We have an honest to God crime to solve. Someone has stolen the Mayor’s wife’s bike, and if that’s not a job for the Hardy Boys, then I’m not a 34 year old white guy suffering from arrested development.

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn tweeted this moments ago:

Concerned citizens immediately tweeted their condolences, and one ambitious cybervigilante offered to step in. “Do you have a description/photo? We’ll get it out to the blogs : )”.

The mayor responds with a photo:

We’ve got a mystery on our hands, folks. You call Chet Morton. I’ll pull The Sleuth out of the boathouse and get her warmed up. We’re going to make dad so proud.

PS — The mayor seems truly upset. Save the bike, save the marriage?

A long time ago, my girlfriend bought me a CD filled with hundreds of old radio shows from the 1940s. One of the best stories was about a selfish, mean-spirited, overly-ambitious scientist who tried to create the biggest rose the world had ever seen. But instead of creating huge flowers, his experiments yielded giant worms. Giant, man-eating worms.

Radio producer Arch Oboler wrote the story, and it aired on his popular “Lights Out” program on October 13, 1942.

Back in 2003, I sucked the story into my computer, chopped it up, and added other people’s music. Then I played the remix for all my friends until they started making excuses not to hang out with me anymore. Now it’s your turn. Enjoy.

Apparently I wrote this story when I was a kid. Apparently the Challenger explosion had an impact on my early work as a writer.

My mom found this and scanned it and sent it to me. I’ve asked her to send more.

The name of this troll is J.H.L. (standing for Jerry, Harry and Larry.) He is the kind of troll that wouldn’t like to hurt anybody. He crawls to get around and moo-o-oos like a sick cow. The only food it eats is rabbits tails and feet.

One day J.H.L. got sick of the planet L.O.I. (meaning Land of Idiots), so he slithered to his capsule and took off. He crashed on the planet Earth. He liked Earth ways, but people were mean to him. They took him to court and pressed charges. He did not want a war so he made an announcement. He said if they fixed his ship, he would leave. So NASA did and the next night he took off. When the people watched it made a flash and blew up. Some say NASA did it on purpose, and cleaning people for NASA said they heard ghostly moo-os, but who knows.

THE END

I don’t have tons of great things to say about Steven Spielberg, but I love the fact that he directed this 1971 episode of Columbo. Apparently he was just 25 years old at the time. And guess who wrote it? YUP! Steven Bochco!

My lady and I watched this episode a few nights ago. It’s pretty good. It’s far from perfect, but it’s a shit ton better than Hook.

RECOMMENDED READING:

The Single-Minded Movie Blog has a relatively in-depth analysis of Spielberg’s work on this film: “When turning our attention to Spielberg’s contribution, it’s important not to romanticize his influence…Still, the episode does feature some quite impressive elements that can only be contributed to the director.”

The Ultimate Columbo Site has an exciting (albeit unrelated) story about a real life mystery involving Columbo’s ride: : “When Columbo finished its run in 1981, nobody suspected it would return one day. So Universal Studios, which makes the show, sold off the lieutenant’s beat-up 1960 Peugeot 403. Ten years later, the series was resurrected and the producers came looking for the car…”

Larry Crane is quick to mention that he remastered the record. He did not remix it. And he says he used a light touch. Still, some fans are upset. You don’t mess with a classic, they say.

I listened to it, and I don’t have an opinion. It sounds nice to me. But I’m not the kind of guy to pick apart old Elliott Smith records. I’m just the kind of guy who likes this video.

A few weeks ago, Harry Connick Jr. visited Australia. While he was there, he sat-in as a judge on a TV variety show called “Hey, Hey It’s Saturday.” When a group of white performers took the stage wearing blackface, Harry Connick Jr gave the act a “zero” and voiced his displeasure. Later in the show, the host apologized, and Connick said he would never have agreed to appear if he’d known that type of act would be involved. (Video here.)

A lot of Australians were pissed. How dare an American accuse them of racism on national television? But according to my friend Beverley, the country definitely does have its issues with race. She told me a story about an uncomfortable encounter she recently had at a German-themed Australian restaurant.

Probably the most important Sesame Street moment in my life was when the grocer Mr. Hooper died. Big Bird didn’t understand what death was, and the gang had to explain it to him. It still breaks my heart.

And it’s pretty obvious that I’m one of them. I’m scared of heights, I’m terrified of authority, and I’ve been known to go fetal before accepting dinner party invitations.

As would any rational person, I’ve always blamed my hyper anxiety on my parents. They raised me and my sister with iron wills and they taught us to follow all rules, always. So it only makes sense to blame them when I can barely bring myself to cut a pad of butter from the wrong end of the stick twenty years later. Right?

Well. Maybe not exactly.

Turns out, I probably would have ended up high-strung no matter who raised me. I was probably born with a brain hard-wired for high anxiety. That’s what Jerome Kagan’s work seems to indicate. Dr. Kagan is an 80-year old developmental psychologist at Harvard, and he’s spent a good chunk of his life testing babies for early signs of “high-reactive behavior.” And – as you might expect – anxious babies become anxious adults. We’re born with it. It’s in our circuitry.

Here’s how science writer Robin Marantz Henig explains it in last Sunday’s New York Times Magazine:

In the brain, [anxious] thoughts can often be traced to overreactivity in the amygdala, a small site in the middle of the brain that, among its many other functions, responds to novelty and threat. When the amygdala works as it should, it orchestrates a physiological response to changes in the environment. That response includes heightened memory for emotional experiences and the familiar chest pounding of fight or flight. But in people born with a particular brain circuitry…the amygdala is hyperreactive, prickly as a haywire motion-detector light that turns on when nothing’s moving but the rain.

That’s pretty sciency. But it doesn’t totally get my parents off the hook. They still could be to blame. My condition could be genetic. And even if isn’t, many people with brains pre-programmed for high anxiety learn to deal with it so effectively that no one knows they’re anxious – not even themselves.

Robin Marantz Henig’s article goes into great detail about the work of Dr. Kagan and his colleagues. You should read it here.

And you should most definitely listen to Robin’s interview on Word of Mouth. Click here for that.
